Meriden Chamber of Commerce/HOLA:

I just wanted to drop you all a line and give you an update about my progress in college. I just returned home for my winter break and, after a quarter of hard work and studying, I am looking forward to the time off.

My first quarter of college was quite challenging. I was faced with adjusting to a new workload, a new school and life in a new state. I am proud to say that, with hard work, I succeeded well. I made the Dean’s List my first quarter and am very happy with my performance.

As you may remember, I entered college with the thought of becoming an airline pilot. Taking my introductory class and learning more about the industry has led me to change my mind. While I am not completely sure what I would like to do, I have been exploring several options. I am currently interested in the fields of law enforcement and medicine.

On campus, I have been getting involved. I have a part-time job at the front desk of my residence hall. As well, I am in RHAC, which is a campus-wide organization designed to improve life in the residence halls. Additionally, I serve on my dorm’s hall council.

Your award has been most helpful in financing my career at Ohio State. I am so glad that I decided to become a Buckeye and I am grateful that your scholarship helped me get here. I’m wishing you all the best with scholarship selection in the next few months and I hope you all have a Merry Christmas.

Regards,

Joey Jones

Here is an Update from one of our HOLA Award Winners Hispanic Outreach Leaders in Action --- AWARD FOLLOW UP! I am pleased to write this update. As a past recipient of the Greater Meriden Chamber of Commerce Scholarship, I am proud to say that thanks to that scholarship, I have been able to achieve many goals in college. During my freshman year, I was hired to work as a math tutor as a work-study position. I also joined clubs like the American Institute of Architecture Students, Spanish Club, and Chinese Club. Both semesters of my freshman year I achieved to be in the Dean's list. On the second semester I was enrolled in the University's Honor's Program. In my current sophomore year, I am still enrolled in the honor's program and the same clubs I mentioned earlier. I enjoy being on campus, meeting new people and learning from different cultures is great. Living on campus has also made me more independent and responsible. Thank you again for the award and I will keep it up until I graduate. Sincerely,David Arce Architecture Student Roger Williams University

Here is an Update from one of our HOLA Award Winners Prisca Maebry."I apologize for not being able to respond to your email sooner. However, I am extremely excited to hear from the Chamber Board and HOLA members! Bryant has been quite an experience so far, I have been adjusting well to the new environment and I've been keeping up with all of my assignments to the absolute best of my ability. College is very different from high school, and at first I was very nervous about the workload and I wasn't sure if I would be able to manage my time and prioritize my tasks well. Fortunately enough, I've started to really get a handle on things and I'm fully confident that my grades this semester will be right near my goal.  The courses that I'm taking are challenging, but I am learning a lot in them and I really think they are preparing me well for future careers.  I've been getting involved in a few clubs such as, The American Woman Association and Helping Hands. I also recently performed in an intercultural show called I2I held on November 19th that Bryant puts on every year and that helps students become more informed about different countries around the world and their culture. The show was so much fun and I'm thinking about being a part of it again next year. Lately, I've just been preparing for my final exams which are in 2 weeks and getting ready to relax and enjoy my Christmas vacation coming soon! I hope all of you had a wonderful thanksgiving and continue to have a happy holiday season! I want to thank you again for my award and let you know that I am very appreciative and honored that I was chosen as one of the recipients. I will do my best to make you all proud and will keep you informed about my Bryant experience."
