Rushford, A Hartford HealthCare Partner will offer Mental Health First Aid training in Meriden and Wallingford during the month of February. Event Details are Friday, February 3rd and Friday, February 10th, 2012. A $10 Registration fee is required. Who should take Mental Health First Aid training?

personnel, nurses and educators

- youth serving non profits

- mental health authorities

- state policymakers, volunteers, and the general public. What is Mental Health First Aid? Mental Health First Aid is a 12-hour interactive training course designed to give members of the public key skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Like CPR training helps a non-medical professional assist an individual following a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid training helps an individual who doesn t have clinical training assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis. Funding for this program is provided by the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare and the United Way of Meriden/Wallingford.

Take Your Child to the Library Day

February 4th has been been designated as "Take Your Child To The Library Day". Libraries throughout Connecticut and Canada will be offering a variety of FREE programming for families. The Tomie dePaola Children's Library will offer two programs. At 10:30 a.m. "Animal Embassy" will present their program "World Wildlife". Children will be allowed to connect through hand-on interaction with this live animal presentation. These exotic animals are found throughout the world. At 2:00 p.m., "Mr. Gym" Chris Keithan's performances will focus on creative movements, using his guitar, vocals, and unique instruments to engage participants in singing and dancing. Shake off your winter chills with this action packed event.

The Chamber Ambassadors are the Membership Committee. It is an organization of Chamber members who serve existing and new members of the Chamber.

The Ambassadors have traditionally had the role of retaining and increasing membership of the Chamber, and in recent years have been developing a network for welcoming new businesses to the area and thanking businesses that continue their membership on an annual basis.

The Ambassadors Membership Committee meets at 8:30 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each month.

Dr. Peter G. Sandwell will present the program "Family Wound Patterns and Emotional Healing". Learn how emotionally traumatic events that occurred in ancestors (2-5 generations back) can be passed down emotionally to children non-verbally. Dr. Sandwell will illustrate how, why, and when the emotional impact from past traumatic events are revisited by the family in the present. Learn how these emotional revisitations are responsible for the onset of many emotional problems. He will share ways families can work together to dissipate the effects of these previous event. Peter G. Sandwell MD is a child and adolescent psychiatrist with over 30 years of experience. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Georgetown University with a B. S. in Chemistry and a graduate of the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. In addition to being a child psychiatrist, he is an expert family therapist. Dr. Sandwell has been working with three generational family units over the past 24 years. He recently released a book written for the general public on three generational family dynamics titled "Solving People Problems for the Creation and Preservation of Family Wealth". The Rev. Ralph Lord will be speaking about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his experiences working with Dr. King. The year 2012 marks the 50th Anniversary of the second arrest and imprisonment of the Rev. Ralph Lord Roy, an area resident. In August 1962 he responded to the request of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and led a "prayer Pilgrimage" to Albany, GA. This resulted in the largest simultaneous incarceration of clergy in American history. The Rev. Roy was pastor of an African-American congregation in Harlem at the time, and went to Albany in July 1962 to attend the trial of Dr. King who had been jailed for 'parading' without a permit. After the trial, he remained to work with Dr. King, became well-acquainted with him, and participated in the efforts of the Albany Movement to battle segregation and other forms of discrimination. He will share his personal memories of Dr. King as well as harassing experiences he had while in Albany. Pastor Roy also will tell of his arrest and jailing as a Freedom Rider during the previous year, in June 1961, in Tallahassee, Fla. This past spring he was among the guests of Oprah at one of her last television shows on CBS as she paid tribute to surviving Freedom Riders on the 50th anniversary of their bold bus excursions into the South. Of the ten clergy arrested on his Interfaith Freedom Ride, only three are alive. The Rev. Roy is a retired United Methodist minister who now resides in Southington. He is a native of northwestern Vermont who was educated at Mt. Hermon School, Swarthmore College, Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary. After his ministry at churches in Harlem and Brooklyn, he came to Connecticut in 1970 where he was the pastor at the First United Methodist Church of Meriden from 1979-1994. He also served in other communities among them Clinton, Milford, Hartford, and New Haven. He is the author of three books; his 'minute messages' are heard on WJMJ and WTIC, his column appears in the Record-Journal, and he continues to write for various other newspapers and magazines.

Indoor Triathlon

It's time to shake up you workout and try something fun. We're having an Indoor Triathlon at the Meriden YMCA. Compete individually or create a team of 3 and have each person compete in one leg of the event. The even is one hour in total, 20 minute swim (laps completed), 20 minutes treadmill (miles completed), and 20 minutes spinning bike (miles completed). There is a 5 minute transition between each event. This event is open to all runners, cyclists, and swimmers age 14 and older. You can do it. Fees are $20 per Meriden YMCA members and $40.00 for nonmembers. Free child care during the event for children of racers (children ages 3 months to 9 years of age) upon request.

David Ritchie, co-director of Central CT Tai Chi Ch'uan, will demonstrate Chi Kung. Chi Kung is the Ancient Chinese exercise of moving one's energy for health and dates back over 3,000 years. Chi Kung, also spelled Qigong, utilizes energy known as Chi and is the foundation for the practice of Tai Chi. In this presentation you will learn about the theory behind traditional Chinese medicine and participate in Chi Kung exercises for relaxation and health. Chi Kung can be practiced by anyone, either sitting or standing. David Ritchie is co-director along with his wife Barbara, of Central Connecticut Tai Chi Ch uan in Meriden which he founded in 1989. David began training in Martial Arts in 1969 and Tai Chi in 1973 and has trained in Tai Chi and Chi Kung in Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Bangkok, Thailand. David has also studied with numerous Masters and instructors in the U.S. David has taught in numerous corporate settings such as the Hospital for Special Care in Bristol, ESPN, and the National Arthritis Foundation where he helped develop the Arthritis Foundation s National Tai Chi for Arthritis program. As an adjunct assistant professor at Quinnipiac University, he taught Tai Chi in the Physical Education Department and Medical Chi Kung in the Respiratory Care Department, the first such program in the country.
