Rushford Offering Mental Health First Aid

Description: Rushford, A Hartford HealthCare Partner will offer Mental Health First Aid training in Meriden and Wallingford during the month of February. Event Details are Friday, February 3rd and Friday, February 10th, 2012. A $10 Registration fee is required.

Who should take Mental Health First Aid training?

- primary care professionals

- employers, human resources professionals and business leaders; school

personnel, nurses and educators

- first-responders, fire, police

- youth serving non profits

- mental health authorities

- state policymakers, volunteers, and the general public.

What is Mental Health First Aid? Mental Health First Aid is a 12-hour interactive training course designed to give members of the public key skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Like CPR training helps a non-medical professional assist an individual following a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid training helps an individual who doesn’t have clinical training assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis.

Funding for this program is provided by the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare and the United Way of Meriden/Wallingford.

Take Your Child to the Library Day

Description: February 4th has been been designated as "Take Your Child To The Library Day". Libraries throughout Connecticut and Canada will be offering a variety of FREE programming for families. The Tomie dePaola Children's Library will offer two programs.

At 10:30 a.m. "Animal Embassy" will present their program "World Wildlife". Children will be allowed to connect through hand-on interaction with this live animal presentation. These exotic animals are found throughout the world.

At 2:00 p.m., "Mr. Gym" Chris Keithan's performances will focus on creative movements, using his guitar, vocals, and unique instruments to engage participants in singing and dancing. Shake off your winter chills with this action packed event.

Family Wound Patterns & Emotional Healing

Description: Dr. Peter G. Sandwell will present the program "Family Wound Patterns and Emotional Healing". Learn how emotionally traumatic events that occurred in ancestors (2-5 generations back) can be passed down emotionally to children non-verbally. Dr. Sandwell will illustrate how, why, and when the emotional impact from past traumatic events are revisited by the family in the present. Learn how these emotional revisitations are responsible for the onset of many emotional problems. He will share ways families can work together to dissipate the effects of these previous event.

Peter G. Sandwell MD is a child and adolescent psychiatrist with over 30 years of experience. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Georgetown University with a B. S. in Chemistry and a graduate of the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. In addition to being a child psychiatrist, he is an expert family therapist. Dr. Sandwell has been working with three generational family units over the past 24 years. He recently released a book written for the general public on three generational family dynamics titled "Solving People Problems for the Creation and Preservation of Family Wealth".
